Funding to cover salaries, equipment, consumables, travel, etc. will be provided to support, on an ad hoc basis, research projects of one to three years duration directed at the replacement of animals and animal products in biological research in line with MAWA principles.
There will be no formal annual round of applications but all applications will follow an established grant application format, refereed and approved by the MAWA management committee before funding.
The MAWA Doctoral Research Scholarship of $75,000 over three years was established with the specific intention of encouraging new scientists to advance the development, validation and application of non-animal methods in medical research.
Recipients of the scholarship will receive an annual stipend of $22,500 and approved expenses up to $2,500 each year for three years in the pursuit of a research program leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
Funding will not be made available simply in support of non-animal research per se. Award of the scholarship is contingent upon the proposed research program being consistent with the stated aims of the Trust, that is to replace animals and animal products in medical research.
The MAWA Quinn Honours Research Scholarship of $10,000 for one year was established to attract new graduates at the beginning of their research careers with regard to the scientific advantages and merit of non-animal-based research.
The hiatus between honours and doctoral studies has been a concern to the MAWA Management Committee given the difficulty for a student to change direction having embarked on an animal-based research career during honours and then wanting to continue in that research area as a doctoral student.
Recipients of the scholarship will receive an annual stipend of $7,000 with a further $3,000 to the host laboratory for research project support.
Successful applicants for the MAWA Doctoral Research Scholarship who are also offered, and decide to accept, an Australian Postgraduate Award, NHMRC or similar scholarship may be offered a MAWA Supplementary Research Scholarship of up to $10,000 per annum. Additional funding may also be offered to contribute to research costs and conference attendance.
Bridging scholarships of up to $10,000 for one semester may be provided to scholars who: have been approved for doctoral studies; are likely to be awarded an NHMRC scholarship, an Australian Postgraduate Award or similar scholarship; are undertaking research projects that meet The MAWA Trust's criteria and fit relevant guidelines; and who wish to commence their studies in second semester rather than at the beginning of the academic year.
Three to twelve months scholarships with stipend and travel funding may be offered to suitable candidates to: visit or work for a brief period in identified institutions promoting alternatives or alternative methodologies; doctoral scholars to continue doctoral work on alternatives overseas through a post-doctoral scholarship; or to approved scholars or researchers to attend identified overseas training programs in the development and implementation of alternatives.
Recipients will be required to provide a detailed report to the MAWA management committee, identifying new directions and initiatives to further the aims of The MAWA Trust.
To support attendance and the presentation of papers or seminars at focused international conferences on issues relative to the MAWA Trust.
Recipients will be required to provide reports and/or copies of papers or seminars to The MAWA Trust.
