Human Safety Testing Without Using Animals

Media Release August 2007

The Medical Advances Without Animals Trust (MAWA) is proud to announce that Dr Hala Raghib, whose research project to monitor drug effects on cardiac disturbances without any use of animals, was undertaken with a MAWA Doctoral Research Scholarship.

Dr Raghib was a nominee for the 2007 Eureka Prize for excellence in scientific research and is the winner of the People’s Choice Award with the overwhelming support of animal lovers throughout Australia.

"I hate using rats in experiments", Hala says, "because the results can so easily be skewed by the rats’ age, diets and stress levels". She believes that alternatives to the use of animals should be developed and adopted quickly and that non-animal methodology such as human cells and tissues and the use of computer modelling is more accurate and provides greater safety for humans.

The MAWA Trust is an independent medical research and educational trust fund.  It only funds projects that do not involve animals at any stage and is unique in deliberately fostering dialogue with medical and scientific research communities.  Its goal is the development and utilisation of non-animal-based experimental methodologies to replace the use of animals in all fields of medical research and education.
