Ms Choo’s research project in viral immunology entitled An Ex Vivo Human Model to Study Viral-Induced Rheumatic Disease is being undertaken at the Centre for Biomedical and Chemical Sciences (CBCS) at the University of Canberra (UC) under the supervision of Professor Suresh Mahalingam, NHMRC Fellow, Associate Dean Research, Director CBCS and Head of Biomedical Sciences. Ms Choo is exploring the basic mechanisms underlying acute and chronic arthritis triggered by viral infections. Much research into inflammatory diseases involves the injection of human viruses into rodents causing pain and distress to the animals but these studies have contributed little to the understanding of the human disease. Ms Choo is using a novel human cell culture model to study viral induced arthritis which is expected to prove more reliable and lead to improved therapies. |
