Ms Elizabeth Ahlston

Ms Elizabeth Ahlston

Ms Elizabeth Ahlston was co-founder of MAWA and is a trustee, board member and MAWA’s current Secretary. She has over 35 years experience and expertise in promoting alternative methodologies to replace the use of animals in teaching, testing and research.

Elizabeth’s involvement began when she established a specialist division within the World League for the Protection of Animals (WLPA) and she was the Australian representative of the UK-based Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME) for several years. In 1978 she founded the Australian Association for Humane Research (AAHR) and was its President and Public Officer for 26 years. In 1990 Elizabeth established The New Educational Aids in Medicine and Science Trust (NEAMS) to support university departments in developing biological science programs to replace animals being used in routine teaching.

When science and medical departments began turning to non-animal teaching methods, such as the use of computers and videos, it was recognised that the NEAMS Trust had served it purpose and it was wound up so that a new organisation could be established. Elizabeth, together with Associate Professor Garry Scroop, then founded The Medical Advances Without Animals Trust with its goal to advance medical science and improve human health by encouraging the development and use of non-animal methodologies to replace animals in both medical and scientific research.
